Paddle Board Buying Guide

Stand up paddle boarding has the easiest learning curve in paddlesports — most people are cruising comfortably within an hour. Picking the right board makes that hour even easier.

Inflatable vs. Hard Boards

Paddle Board Buying Guide

Inflatable SUPs pack into a backpack, store in a closet, and travel anywhere — modern drop-stitch boards are remarkably rigid and the right call for most paddlers. Hard boards edge them out in glide and responsiveness if you have the racks and storage.

Size & Volume Basics

For all-around paddling, most adults do best on a board 10'6"–11'6" long and 32–34" wide. Bigger paddlers, dogs, or kids aboard? Go wider and higher-volume. Volume (liters) roughly maps to flotation — when in doubt, size up for stability.

The Gear That Completes It

A proper SUP paddle sized 8–10" over your height, a low-profile SUP life jacket, and a leash (quick-release for any moving water). That's the whole kit.
