Wilderness Systems
Bob Taylor, founder and owner of Appomattox River Company, first met Andy Zimmerman "Zimmi" through John Shepperd and Forrest Callaway "Woody" in the summer of 1981. Andy, John and Forrest were from the Greensboro/Winston-Salem area. All four loved the New River in West Virginia since it was the best whitewater river to paddle during the summer, and they paddled together quite often.
Andy and John started building some whitewater kayaks for personal use in Zimmi's backyard. Soon they were making them for friends. Andy's sharp business mind and John's creative construction ability were a perfect match, and in 1986 they went into business calling their kayak company "Wilderness Systems."
