Kayaking Gear Designed for Women

Women in outdoor sports know the problem well. Gear made for men rarely fits right, and that frustration can be enough to keep women from getting on the water in the first place. Fortunately, designs from leading paddlesports manufacturers have come a long way. Here are some of our favorites in women’s paddle gear, picked by the women of Appomattox River Company.

PFDs

The most important accessory for any paddler, life vests are also one of the most frustrating pieces of gear for women to fit correctly. We carry a wide selection of women’s-specific models for varying needs. Our top picks come from Astral and Stohlquist.

Astral Linda

Astral Linda PFD

The Linda is our first recommendation for in-store try-ons. It features a thin-back design for compatibility with modern kayak seats, good ventilation through low-cut arms and a rear mesh strip, and two easy-access side-zip pockets. Molded cups accommodate the female form without the constriction common in men’s jackets. The versatile fit makes it one of our best-sellers.

Astral Layla

Astral Layla PFD

If every PFD you’ve tried has pinched or bunched somewhere, the Layla may be your answer. Multiple panels on hinged princess seams wrap more flexibly around women’s curved torsos. The side zipper works especially well for women with larger busts — easy to see and work without adding bulk to the front. Like the Linda, the Layla uses molded cups for a comfortable, low-constriction fit.

NRS Nora

Like the Layla, the Nora uses multiple panels to flex and wrap comfortably around women’s bodies. It adds a back mesh strip for extra ventilation and conveniently placed pockets for one-handed access.

Stohlquist Misty

If you prefer a more traditional silhouette over the front-loaded bulk of high-back styles, the Misty is worth a try. Its larger surface area distributes flotation evenly across the vest, resulting in a thinner, more flexible feel. When adjusted correctly, it fits like a gentle hug. The Misty also accommodates larger, more functional pockets — a rare and welcome feature.

Stohlquist Flo

Stohlquist Flo PFD

The Flo maximizes ventilation in a women’s fit. Its high back sits above the seatback of most modern kayaks, and extensive back and side ventilation keeps you cool on the hottest days. Cross-chest cinch pulls prevent the vest from riding up over long paddles. If you paddle frequently in hot weather, the Flo is one of the most breathable women’s-specific PFDs on the market.

Dry Gear

Cooler temperatures and changing seasons don’t have to mean time off the water — but dry suits are one category where a men’s fit simply won’t work for women. While most dry suits are designed for men, Kokatat offers solid options built specifically for female paddlers.

Kokatat Hydrus 3.0 Meridian Dry Suit

Kokatat Meridian Dry Suit

An entry-level price point with all the features most paddlers need. The key difference from a men’s suit is the relief zipper design — here a drop seat rather than a front zip. The Meridian is front-entry, so you don’t need a friend to zip you in, and includes integrated booties and a dual adjustable overskirt.

Kokatat Gore-Tex Front Entry Dry Suit

Kokatat Gore-Tex Dry Suit

For paddlers who spend serious time on cold water, Gore-Tex is the gold standard. Kokatat’s 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro women’s suit features a front-entry Optiseal zipper for complete dryness in tough conditions, a rear drop seat, and latex gaskets. Every Kokatat suit is fill-tested and guaranteed.

Spray Skirts

Most whitewater skirts work for paddlers of any body type, but women often find women’s-specific tunnel designs more comfortable and less prone to rolling or bunching at the waist. Many leading spray skirt models come in women’s fits with a shorter tunnel for better comfort on women’s torsos.

Seals Athena Sprayskirt

Seals Athena Sprayskirt

The Athena is the women’s cut of Seals’ popular Surf skirt, featuring high-performance 4mm neoprene, bungee attachment, and a lower 6” tunnel. Like the Surf, it’s designed for beginner to intermediate paddlers.

Immersion Research J-Lo Whitewater Skirt

Immersion Research J-Lo Skirt

For paddlers who spend more time in demanding whitewater, Immersion Research adapted their bestselling Shockwave skirt for women’s bodies. The J-Lo features anti-implosion patches, a tunnel 2” shorter than the Shockwave’s, and a slightly stretchier neoprene tunnel for comfort around the waist and hips.

Men’s gear can work in a pinch, but there’s a real difference when the fit is right. At Appomattox River Company, we don’t stock lower-quality gear for women — we only carry brands that do it right. You shouldn’t have to compromise on quality for a better fit, and we’re here to help you find gear that works for you.
