5 Reasons You Should Be Paddling

As if you needed a reason to get on the water — here are five.

Nothing compares to being out on the water. It's not just the workout, the scenery, or that moment you enter the flow state and your mind goes quiet. It's the magical combination of all of the above. That's why we love it.

You probably don't need motivation to get out on the water, but maybe you have a friend you've been trying to convince. Here are our top five reasons paddling is the best — share them freely with the uninitiated.

1. Improve Your Cardio-Respiratory Fitness

"Rivers have what man most respects and longs for in his own life and thought — a capacity for renewal and replenishment, continual energy, creativity, cleansing."
— John M. Kauffmann

Even flatwater paddling maintains steady movement that gets your heart pumping — a form of exercise known as steady-state cardio. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of aerobic activity five days per week to reduce the risk of heart disease. Paddling fits that prescription perfectly: it strengthens the heart muscle, improves lung efficiency, and works equally well as a standalone workout or as cross-training alongside an existing fitness routine.

2. Get a Full-Body Strength Workout

"We play in a variety of places, wherever the water is good. If the creek is running and you want to run the creek, we'll do that."
— Eric Jackson

Paddling builds more than heart and lung health — it builds full-body strength and flexibility. Many people assume it's purely an upper-body workout, but every stroke engages your arms, chest, and back; rotational movement works your core; and leg pressure against the hull activates your lower body as you stabilize and balance. Because paddling is low-impact, it's a smart choice for cross-training, joint health, and — with your doctor's clearance — recovery from certain injuries.

3. Escape Everyday Stress and Anxiety

"When I'm out on the boat on the water, no one can hand me my kids. I don't have my phone, no one can get a hold of me, forget it, I'm gone."
— Emily Jackson

Just 20 minutes in nature can reduce stress hormone levels, according to a 2019 study. Paddling isn't just exercise for your body — it's relief for your mind. Unplugging from screens and moving your body, even gently, improves focus and releases endorphins. Over time, the repetitive motion becomes almost meditative. Regular time on the water is linked to decreased tension, elevated mood, and better sleep.

4. Connect with Nature

"What sets a canoeing expedition apart is that it purifies you more rapidly and inescapably than any other. Travel a thousand miles by train and you are a brute; pedal 500 on a bicycle and you remain basically a bourgeois; paddle a hundred in a canoe and you are already a child of nature."
— Pierre Trudeau

Paddling reconnects you with the natural world in a way few activities can match. The slow, gradual movement from shoreline to shallow flats to narrow inlets to open water lets you focus on shifting scenery without distraction. Time outdoors also means plenty of Vitamin D — supporting immune response, bone health, and brain and muscle function — along with a natural boost in serotonin.

5. Build Community

"You can't be unhappy in the middle of a big, beautiful river."
— Jim Harrison

Paddling improves your day — and your life. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, you're part of a community that extends well beyond the water. Out solo? Chances are you'll cross paths with a fellow paddler and make a connection. Paddling with a group? Exploring together, navigating challenges, and traveling toward a shared destination builds real camaraderie.

The benefits are real, so grab your paddle and your PFD and get out there. Just getting started?
