In July 2022, Astral is launching its first Limited Edition (LE) Layla in collaboration with whitewater kayaker Nicole Mansfield and artist Kate Shea. This is the first time Astral has developed a Limited Edition Layla PFD. Over 20 years ago the Layla was the first life jacket made with organic kapok to fit a curvy body. Astral continues to honor that innovation with this LE’s artwork, which features Shea's iconic figure illustration and use of bright color blocking with a nod to graffiti-style art. Shea pairs wildlife and river current illustrations, capturing the elegance and playfulness of water. Designed for class I-V, the Layla LE is an incredibly versatile PFD, with classic princess seams, form-fitting organic kapok and a sculpted chest that fits a curvy body.

“Layla is a very versatile PFD.”
“This two-year project celebrates athletes of all levels and interests in the water, especially as they work through challenges.” Ollie Smithers, Astral Sourcing Manager
“I really enjoy seeing how people’s creativity manifests itself in so many different ways - whether it be through visual or literary mediums, a unique line through a rapid, styling a trick, or finding a new first descent.” “When on the river or in the mountains, I want my gear to be functional, but I don’t want it to be boring. So, it’s fun having the opportunity to be part of a project where art is interfaced somewhere it often isn’t - a PFD.” Nicole Mansfield, Astral athlete and kayaker
“I think this project is important and will be well-received by the river community because it is something for the everyday paddler and not just aimed toward the class V boater.” “[The art] represents the peace and inspiration I get from being amongst the Ottawa River and everything and everyone that comes with it.” Kate Shea, artist
